EMPOWER THE INMATES INITIATIVE started as the corporate social responsibility of Yommyfad Limited. The project is a unique educational program that aims to help rehabilitate, empower and reintegrate inmates back into the society through Information Communication Technology (ICT), formal education and other entrepreneurial skill acquisition. Empower the inmates initiative in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Oyo State Chapter with the permission of the Nigerian Correctional Service started “EMPOWER THE INMATES" in Agodi Correctional Facility, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. It is a free, unique, educational training program for inmates.
The training program started September 23, 2013 and each batch is engaged for the period of three (3) months in computer appreciation, system maintenance and other entrepreneurial skill acquisition to prepare and equip inmates for life after their incarceration. We saw the need for them to be formally educated and sit for Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) examination and also attend a university inside the prison and in July, 2017, we started a free NECO / WAEC coaching class for inmates in Agodi Correctional Facility, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria preparing them for examinations.
October 2018, we facilitated the registration of 26 inmates for the 2018 November / December NECO Examination which was the maiden examination since 1894 that the Correctional Facility was built. November 2020, Oyo State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs approved our activities at the Juvenile Correctional institution and Child Care Unit, Ijokodo, Ibadan. We were able to celebrate Christmas with the kids of the institution in 2020 and now we are organizing a tailoring class for the children which will help them acquire tailoring skills which is one of the vocational skills we plan to train them on. We plan to have an ICT laboratory in the facility which will help us train this kids on different ICT skills as well.
The project is designed to build confidence in the prison inmates and prepare them to face the outside world with a very objective and positive mind and to build a better society through ICT and other entrepreneurial skill acquisition.
